Why use Bowen?
We all know that bones and joints are the foundation of our bodies.
After all, without bones we would not be able to maintain an upright
position and without joints we would be unable to perform the many
tasks that we take for granted, like sitting and running. However,
it is the muscles, tendons and ligaments that enable us to perform
even the simplest of tasks and so it makes sense to ensure that
these important components of our bodies are able to perform in as
optimum a way as possible.
Even the slightest muscle ache can inhibit movement
and slow us down, but if that ache is left unattended for any length
of time then the body will have to compensate in some way and
usually finds another way to perform the same tasks. This can lead
to greater and greater imbalances within the body structure, not
only affecting the way we move but also the functioning of our
internal organs.
But Bowen works much deeper than at just muscular level and enables
communication between the many organ systems within the body. Thus
it can be seen that Bowen is beneficial to the body as a whole and
can also benefit the immune system, lymphatic system and
circulation. The body is always striving to maintain balance, and
will do its level best no matter what strains and stresses we may
place upon it. Bowen will assist the body to do this in an holistic
and gentle way.
What Is Bowen?
The Bowen Technique is a gentle, holistic
(treating the whole body) hands on treatment which balances and
realigns the body’s systems. Bowen consists of a series of gentle,
rolling moves made with fingers and thumbs on soft tissue (e.g.,
muscles, ligaments and tendons) at specific points on the body.
These moves stimulate energy flow, thereby empowering the body’s own
ability to heal itself. This can induce deep relaxation at emotional
and muscular level, stimulate circulation, increase lymphatic
drainage and realign skeletal imbalance
There is no force with Bowen. This gentle approach can act as a
catalyst, stimulating the bodies systems to balance themselves. This
can have a useful effect on high/low blood pressure, respiratory
rate and body temperature.
There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue (bones) during
a Bowen treatment.
How does Bowen work?
The body has its own blueprint of how it should be and how it should
perform and will endeavour to regulate and maintain this to the best
of its ability, no matter what stresses are placed upon it.
The Bowen moves are designed to connect all the parts of the body
releasing neuromuscular imbalances throughout, enabling the
body to continue with its self regulating process. Depending
on the extent of the imbalance, this process can take anywhere
between several minutes to several days. Additional treatments
may be required to enable the process to continue.
A feature of the technique is a series of two minute intervals where
the therapist leaves the room. This allows the body to absorb the
information given in the gentle moves allowing fine adjustments to take
place. Unlike many therapies Bowen does not attempt to impart the
will of the therapist on the body but rather allows the body to respond in its
own time.
Bowen treats the body as a whole and each body will respond to the
Bowen moves in different ways according to the underlying cause.
Origins of Bowen
The Bowen Technique was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia after noticing that certain moves on the body had particular beneficial effects. Over a period of about forty years he went on to develop the technique as we know it today.
His work was not just confined to humans, however, as he also had
great success with animals, and in particular racehorses.

How many Bowen treatments will I need?
Although amazing results can be achieved in one or
two treatments many conditions may require three or more. It is
recommended that treatments are carried out at seven day intervals
and after-care recommendations will be given at the end of each
treatment. You will need to allow approximately one hour for a Bowen
treatment.
Christine is qualified in both The Bowen Technique and EMRT™ (Bowen
on Horses).
Important note
Bowen is not meant to take the place of diagnosis and treatment by
a qualified medical practitioner. If you are at all concerned about
your health then please refer to your normal health care
professional.
